NOT AT HOME

Tom did not get to come home today and we're both pretty bummed (so are the puppies).  As I suspected, Tom's PCP decided to give him IV fluid in addition to the IV antibiotics.  He's also getting Lasik again to help get rid of some swelling in his legs and feet.  It's weird sometimes - give fluid and then give him medicine to get rid of fluid.  Anyway, he also ordered blood work since none had been done all weekend.  I guess we'll see what that says tomorrow.  The doctor did mention that Tom's liver enzymes were better in the blood work that was done last Friday so that's great news.  The doc was not too concerned about the new urinary track infection (I think that's supposed to be tract).  He said the bacteria was minute but he was going to continue to give Tom the antibiotic for it.  Tom's BP was pretty low last night and again this morning.  I thought it might have something to do with the new antibiotic and/or the fluid or lack of fluid.  Tom was even concerned about it as he has started making his own notes :-)  His BP was higher this evening and no one seems to be too alarmed so we'll continue to see how that does.

The fluid they pulled from Tom's abdomen last week was clear.  I'm not sure I understand what that means at this point - even if it's clear, it seems to me that it still shouldn't have been there in the first place.  The explaination Tom gave me from the doctor didn't make sense either so I won't even try to explain it here.  Tom is still experiencing some pain in his abdomen.  I'm trying to be better about keeping my mouth shut and letting Tom ask the questions.  So I apologize for not being able to provide more detail.

Hopefully this won't turn into another marathon hospital stay.  I think I ran on adrenaline last time and I haven't had enough time to build up any reserves.  I am tired!  Thank goodness my neighbor has graciously offered to come and let the dogs out to play this week - that helps ease my mind a lot.  I am still missing more work than I want but I think I'm keeping up with the workload.

Please pray for Tom's speedy recovery and also thank God that Tom is participating more in his care.

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

Hope everyone has had a Happy Memorial Day.  Tom and I were treated to a "picnic" by Tom's good friend Dennis today.  We had ribs, pork, chicken, cole slaw, beans, apples, and corn pudding.  To top it off, we had the most amazing banana pudding!!

Some tests revealed that Tom had a urinary track infection and so he received a second kind of antibiotic for that today.  They also increased the frequency of his reflux medicine so hopefully that will help him as well.  Overall he is feeling pretty good.  We're both hoping he can go home tomorrow!  So please pray that the infection is totally under control and also that we can get a plan to fix the hernia.

Here's to hoping there is really good news to report tomorrow!

ANOTHER UNEVENTFUL DAY

That pretty much says it all.  The on-call doc was considering letting Tom go home tomorrow but at that point of the weekend - it really wouldn't matter.  So, he's going to stay and continue to get the antibiotics which is probaby the best thing to do.  They didn't send him home with any oral antibiotics last time, I'm curious as to whether they will do that this time.  Obviously this infection is not going away and probably won't until they can get into his abdomen and fix whatever is wrong.  It would be nice to be able to go ahead and get that done during this stay but I don't know if that is possible.  I guess we'll wait to see what his PCP says on Tuesday.

Tom is doing well.  He did get up and walk in the hall today.  He was pretty happy to have 2 long auto races to watch!

I guess that's it for this post.  I better head to bed.  The puppies don't understand weekends and holidays and "sleeping in" so we'll probably be up pretty early again!

DOING BETTER

About the only news we have to report today is that Tom's white blood cell count is down to about 18. It's still high (normal would be 10) but moving quickly in the right direction.  He continues to receive IV antibiotics and the thyroid medicine.  His heart rate was a little high today so they ran an EKG and then decided that they needed to give him his high blood pressure medicine again.  Neither one of us know why they stopped giving it to him in the first place.  I thought his BP this evening was higher than it's been so we'll see what it's doing in the morning.

Tom ate more at dinner tonight than I've seen him eat in a long time so that's good.  I would like to see him up and around more and have mentioned that to him a time or two (or four).  Anyway, I'm sure there is no chance that he will come home before Tuesday so we'll continue on this course.  Tom's good friend Dennis came by for a visit today which did wonders for Tom's mood.  I am so grateful.  There will be lots of racing for Tom to watch tomorrow so that will help pass the time (and maybe give me a chance to do a few things I had hoped to get done this weekend).

I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day weekend.  Please say a extra prayer for safety of those who continue to fight for our freedom and for comfort for those families who have lost a loved one - for any reason.  Life is a precious gift from God.

A regular room

Well, we're in a regular room now - it's not as nice as the room we had last time but on the same floor.  This room is about half the size.  The very kind charge nurse said if they discharge someone on the other side of the hall tomorrow they will move Tom into a larger room.  This one has no shower - just a tub - which doesn't work well for Tom at all.

Tom continues to receive IV antibiotics and probably some fluids.  He is still dehydrated.  The doctors have not determined a source of the infection yet.  I think he'll be here a few days.  His white blood cell count is down a little today though so at least there is improvement.  He is still getting the Thyroid medicine too.

He is allowed regular food and as much fluid as he can drink although he still feels full after a few bites or a few sips of water.  I'm trying to encourage him to get up and walk so he doesn't lose all of the progress he's made with physical therapy.  We brought the walker so he has that if he needs it.  I don't know if there are orders for physical therapy from the hospital - I don't dare mention it in front of Tom :-)

The nurses are all impressed with how well Tom looks - even though he is back in the hospital.  I must say it is a relief that he is in much better shape on this visit.  It really helps with his care and I don't feel like I have to spend quite as much time at the hospital.

So, we're dealing with it.  God has been good to us.  Hopefully the doctors and the medicine will take care of whatever is wrong - quickly and painlessly!

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

He's back . . .

in the hospital!

Yes, it's true.  Hopefully just a minor setback but a setback nonetheless.  Tom had a follow-up appointment with his primary care physician yesterday.  He complained of some discomfort in his abdomen.  The doctor ran some blood tests.

This morning the doctor called us back to the office to review the test results (not usually a good sign).  I left work, picked up Tom and we headed to his doctor.  Tom's white blood cell count was pretty high - a sign of infection.  Even though the red blood cell count was better and he had no fever, the doctor suspected some type of infection.  His recommendation was to re-admit Tom to the hospital.  Tom was sent directly to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).  This is just around the corner from where we were last time - with a whole new set of nurses.

Tom had a CT scan and ultrasound of his abdomen this afternoon.  They found there to be quite a bit of fluid and drained about 700 ccs.  They will run a culture on the fluid to see if they can determine the source of the infection.  The did see the hernia too so it's still there.  They ran some blood cultures and then started IV fluids and IV antibiotics.  They are also giving Tom a Thyroid medicine because his TSA was high on the test results from yesterday (this Thyroid condition could also be why Tom is weak and tired); and he's getting a drug that they use to treat pancreatitis - just in case.  They will use the original blood cultures and compare them to what they pull this evening and tomorrow to see which direction to go with further treatment.

So, in the meantime, Tom is on complete bed rest and can't have anything to eat or drink at least until after his evaluation in the morning.

Tom will be seeing the same critical care doctor we had before.  Hopefully we can get a good plan in place before all the regular docs take off for the beautiful 3-day holiday weekend we will be having here in Nashville.

I'll not be staying in the lovely ICU waiting room this time.  I'm hanging with the crazy puppies!  I left Tom in the care of a very good RN.

Although I don't want to make a big deal of this situation at this point, this is the best format for letting our family and friends know what is going on.  So, I do ask that you will lift Tom up in prayer again.  I will continue to post as I receive additional information.

GREETINGS

Hello everyone!  I know it's been a long time since the last post but we've been working on living our "normal" lives again.

It was great to have my parents here this week.  They were such a big help - mostly just being here and helping Tom if he needed it and giving me peace of mind while I was at work.  They shuttled Tom to and from his doctors appointment this week and also took him by his office for a short visit.  They also got to bond with their "grand dogs".  I know the puppies will miss their laps and their love!

The results from the blood tests at the doctors office arrived today.  Tom's bilirubin is now at 6.7.  Even though normal is 0.2 - 1.2, a month ago it was 9.1!  So, it is much better.  Tom is still yellow and a bit itchy but that is improving.  The liver enzymes we track are AST which is now 78 and ALT which is n ow 59.  The normal range for these is between 10 and 40.  A month ago they were 100 and 63 respectively so it's exciting to see those numbers falling too.  The only thing that needs work is his iron level.  We have a prescription for an iron supplement to get filled for that.  I think that will help Tom have more energy too.

Tom and I had an outing today to a shoe store I've been trying for years to get him to go to.  It's where I get my work-out shoes and they specialize in fitting your feet.  He purchased two new pairs of shoes.  He doesn't seem to be as excited about it as I am when I purchase new shoes but I guess that's a guy thing!

Tom continues physical therapy 3 times a week.  He is now walking more with a cane instead of the walker which is really good.  He should get extra credit for the sitting, standing and walking he did today at the shoe store.

I think I mentioned that it will probably be a couple of more weeks before Tom goes back to work.  This really depends on his strength and energy level.  We'll see what the doctor says on his next visit.

I will probably be spending the rest of the weekend going through the mountain of insurance paperwork and doctors bills.  It's something I have been dreading.  If I don't start paying the bills, I may get in trouble.  I know we haven't received everything yet but I can at least get what I have organized I suppose.

Again, I thank you so much for following this blog and keeping Tom and me in your thoughts and prayers.  I keep saying he wouldn't be here if it were not for all of your prayers - I truly believe that.  God saw fit to let Tom live.  We are so blessed by everything you all have done.  We continue to receive cards and food!  There is still work to be done but we only have today so we won't worry about the future.  We will be thankful for this day that the Lord has made.

God bless you too!

FOLLOW UP DOCTOR'S APPT

Tom had his first follow up appointment with his PCP today.  It is all good!  Kidneys are normal, blood pressure is great.  No liver numbers though.  When I left, Tom was on his way to the lab so they could draw (more) blood to run liver enzyme tests and iron level tests.  Apparently Tom's red blood cell count is low, so that will be something he needs to work on (probably with an iron supplement and nutrition).  The doctor thought Tom looked really good . . . still pale but not as yellow!

Overall, Tom is doing great.  He is getting around at home well.  Four Home Health reps have been to the house so far.  The first was on Saturday for vitals and an assessment.  Sunday the PT rep came out to do his assessment.  Yesterday a rep came out to draw blood and the OT (Occupational Therapist) arrived to do her assessment.  It turns out that Tom does not need OT.  Tomorrow the PT rep comes back!

My parents are here and are taking good care of Tom.  They were responsible for getting Tom to the doctor and back home today (I met them there).  The puppies are getting lots of love and attention from their grandparents (and are giving it back).

Our prayer is that Tom will continue to get stronger, that his red blood cell count will go up and the results from his liver enzyme test will show lots of improvement.

HE'S HOME!!

Tom has finally made it home sweet home!

Our neighbors put up a "Welcome Home" sign complete with balloons - how wonderful is that?!?!?

They sent us home with a loaner wheelchair.  Let me tell you it is probably not worth the trouble it took to get it in the trunk of my car and then into the house - Tom really doesn't need it anyway.  When my sister-in-law had her house built, she had them build all of the doorways so that they were wheelchair accessible.  I said that if Tom and I ever built a house, we were going to do the same thing - I highly recommend that idea - you never know what might happen!  In case you're wondering why I didn't take the truck, Tom preferred the car.

Tom is settled into the recliner and has been served one of my gourmet peanut butter & jelly sandwiches (NOT).  The dogs are getting used to him again - personally I can't wait until they jump on his face and lick it tomorrow morning at 5 a.m.

Later today we might take a joint trip to the grocery store - that ought to be fun.  We haven't done that together in years.  It will probably be expensive too!

NHC gave us the results of Tom's blood work.  His kidney number was .88 (normal is .6 to 1.4 - according to the hospital).  How great is that?!?  His white blood cell count is "within range" also!  They didn't run his liver enzymes.  Home Health will come on Monday and do some more blood work and of course, he's going to the doctor on Tuesday.

For now we will just relax and enjoy something much closer to "normal".  If you don't hear from me for a couple of days, don't worry.  I will post after the doctor visit on Tuesday.

OOPS

Sorry, didn't mean to skip a day . . . when I get home from visiting Tom, I get so distracted with the puppies and stuff to do, I just forget - this is pretty normal for me.

There is really nothing new to report.  Tom is anxious to get home.  He's working pretty hard in PT and is sore in the evenings.  I spoke with the NHC case manager yesterday and Tom will continue Home Health PT once he leaves in-patient rehab.  Of course, I have all kinds of things for him to do to keep him active.  I told him it was his responsibility to potty train the puppies and I also thought I might take away the remotes - both of those things will get him up and down a bunch :-)

They did draw some blood yesterday so I left a list with Tom of the counts I wanted so hopefully Tom will be able to get those today and we can see his progress in numbers!

On other GREAT family news, my sister-in-law, Debbie received a letter yesterday that she was accepted to Radiology Tech school.  She has such a caring heart and will be a fantastic radiology tech.  Of course her 4.0 GPA didn't hurt either!  Way to go Debbie!!!

HOMECOMING

Yes, it's finally happening!!

Tom is coming home on Friday.  He will be discharged between 9 and noon!  Home Health will come to the house and work with him next week.  My parents will be here on Monday to help as well so it's all coming together.  I have a few things (like a million) to do at home to get ready for him but I'll get those done in my spare time between now and then . . . NOT!

Hopefully Tom will work extra hard the next two days so he can do most everything without the need for a walker.

Tom has a doctors appointment with his PCP next week so I guess we'll get some blood work done then and will see how Tom is progressing.

That's all the news for today!  We are praising the Lord for his blessings and for answering our prayers!

INTENSE REHAB

Tom said he had 2 sessions of rehab today totaling 3 1/2 hours!!  He walked a lot and did a bunch of leg lifts.  He seems a bit more steady on his feet tonight too.  He took a shower and right before dinner we had to move to the hallway because of a tornado warning.  We stood in the hall with the other patients for 45 minutes.  Actually, Tom sat in a wheelchair and I stood!

By the time we got back to the room, dinner was cold so I ran out to Wendy's for a couple of sandwiches.

They didn't take any blood for tests today.  So no numbers to gage his progress.  Tom said they only release patients Monday through Thursday so if he's not sent home on Thursday, I guess it will be sometime next week.

On the home front, one of our brand new toilets is defective and has leaked.  So now there is a hole in the ceiling of the family room and the toilet is out of commission.  I've ordered a new one and will have to wait for it to come in.  I won't have my parents come to help until we can get the toilet replaced upstairs.  In addition, I had to take my car to the shop today for some service.  My friend Becky came through (again) and helped me get home from the dealership.  Now all I have to do is get back there tomorrow.  I told Tom if he doesn't come home soon, I'm going to trade him in for a wife like me!

I keep thinking about all those folks affected by the recent tornado's and then I remember that I can handle a small hole in the ceiling - at least I have a ceiling over my head and 2 other toilets that work great!  Please keep those folks in your prayers and thank God that Tom is getting better!

R&R

Today was a day of rest for Tom.  I went to visit after Church and had lunch with him.  Then he got in a wheelchair and we strolled around the facility.  It finally stopped raining here so we could enjoy some sunshine in the courtyard.  His friend Dennis came to visit also which was nice.

Tom should be pretty busy with PT the next few days.  I think they will probably do some bloodwork tomorrow too so we'll pray for continued good news.

If you decide you want to visit, you might want to call first.  We were looking at the "activity calendar" and Tom could potentially be participating in some of the fun events they have lined up this week like "Welk hour" (I suppose that is a reference to Lawrence Welk for those of you old enough to remember him), or there is also "Fun with Yarn" - maybe Tom will learn how to knit hats or sweaters or something.  If he is still there on Friday, they have "Puzzles" scheduled for the afternoon.  :-)

Tom is feeling pretty good, although still itching some.  He is getting sleep at night too.  His only complaint is that the nurses and techs don't seem to know how to shut his door when they leave!  It will be good exercise for him to get up and go shut it himself!

He told me not to come by in the morning (probably because he knows it's going to be pretty early) so I won't see him until after work.  Look for another post tomorrow night.
